Problem

A spray nozzle disperses water (ρ=1000 kg m−3\rho = 1000\,\mathrm{kg\,m^{-3}}, surface tension γ=0.072 N m−1\gamma = 0.072\,\mathrm{N\,m^{-1}}) into a co-flowing airstream of speed U=15 m s−1U = 15\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} and density ρa=1.2 kg m−3\rho_a = 1.2\,\mathrm{kg\,m^{-3}}. A drop breaks up once its Weber number We=ρaU2d/γWe = \rho_a U^2 d/\gamma, with dd the drop diameter, exceeds the critical value of about 1212. ((a)) Find the diameter of the largest drop that survives this airstream intact. ((b)) Find the frequency of the lowest shape oscillation, mode l=2l=2, of that largest drop.
