Problem

A fit of two parameters pp (in cm) and qq (in ms) produces a contour map of χ2\chi^2. The χmin⁡2+1\chi^2_{\min}+1 contour is an ellipse whose projection onto the pp-axis runs from 3.05 cm3.05\,\mathrm{cm} to 3.35 cm3.35\,\mathrm{cm}, and whose projection onto the qq-axis runs from 0.61 ms0.61\,\mathrm{ms} to 1.03 ms1.03\,\mathrm{ms}. The ellipse is tilted so that, moving along it, an increase in pp is always accompanied by a decrease in qq. ((a)) Read off the standard uncertainty σp\sigma_p from the width of the ellipse's projection onto the pp-axis. ((b)) Read off σq\sigma_q in the same way. ((c)) State whether the correlation coefficient between pp and qq is positive or negative, and give that sign as +1+1 or −1-1.
