Condensed Matter Physics, Ch Diffraction: how a structure is actually measured
Problem
An iron oxide crystal's atomic positions have already been solved by X-ray diffraction. You now want to know whether the iron atoms carry a magnetic moment and, if so, how those moments are arranged from atom to atom. Which of X-rays, neutrons or electrons must you use, and why can the X-ray measurement already in hand not answer this question, however precisely it is repeated?
