Problem

An earlier demonstration (Section 7.2) shows that adding a quartic term −ϵx4-\epsilon x^4 to the well U(x)=12Kx2−βx3U(x) = \tfrac12Kx^2 - \beta x^3 shifts ⟨x⟩\langle x\rangle by nothing at first order. Consider instead adding a general extra term −γxn-\gamma x^n, with nn a positive integer, n≥3n \geq 3. ((a)) Show that this term shifts ⟨x⟩\langle x\rangle at first order if and only if nn is odd. ((b)) Hence say which of the next two Taylor terms beyond the cubic one, the quartic (x4x^4) or the quintic (x5x^5), could in principle add a further first-order contribution to the thermal expansion.
