Problem
Let f be twice continuously differentiable on R with f′′(x)>0 for every x, and suppose f′ takes every real value.
((a)) Explain why f′(x)=s has exactly one solution x∗(s) for each real s, why x∗ is a differentiable function of s, and why supx(sx−f(x)) is attained at x∗(s).
((b)) With g(s)=L[f](s)=sx∗(s)−f(x∗(s)), show that g′(s)=x∗(s) and g′′(s)=1/f′′(x∗(s)).
((c)) Show that L[g](x)=sups(xs−g(s))=f(x) for every real x.
((d)) Check parts (b) and (c) on f(x)=coshx: find g(s) and confirm that g′(s)=sinh−1s.
