Problem
A thermistor calibration produces n paired readings (ti,Ri), i=1,…,n, and a model R=α+βt is to be fitted by least squares. Write b=(R1,…,Rn)T∈Rn for the measured resistances and let A be the n×2 real matrix whose columns are 1=(1,…,1)T and t=(t1,…,tn)T, so that the fitted values are Ax with x=(α,β)T.
((a)) Starting from the projection theorem for the real inner product ⟨u,v⟩=uTv on Rn, derive the normal equations satisfied by the least-squares estimate x, and state which subspace the residual b−Ax must lie in and why.
((b)) Define the centred vectors u=t−tˉ1 and v=b−Rˉ1, where tˉ and Rˉ are the sample means of ti and Ri. Using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality on Rn, show that the sample correlation coefficient r=⟨u,v⟩/(∥u∥∥v∥) satisfies −1≤r≤1, with equality if and only if v is a real scalar multiple of u.
