Problem

Consider the nnth-order linear homogeneous differential equation y(n)+an−1(x)y(n−1)+⋯+a1(x)y′+a0(x)y=0y^{(n)} + a_{n-1}(x)y^{(n-1)} + \cdots + a_1(x)y' + a_0(x)y = 0 on an interval II, with every coefficient aia_i continuous on II. Using the existence and uniqueness theorem for the equivalent first-order system, prove that the set of solutions on II is a vector space of dimension exactly nn (over R\mathbb{R} if the aia_i are real). State where continuity of the aia_i on the whole of II is used.
