Problem
Let u be harmonic (∇2u=0) and have continuous second partial derivatives on an open connected region V⊂R2, and let DR(r0) be a closed disc of radius R centred at r0∈V, lying entirely inside V.
((a)) Using Green's second identity in the plane, ∫A(u∇2ψ−ψ∇2u)dA=∮∂A(u∂nψ−ψ∂nu)ds, together with the two-dimensional fundamental solution ψ(r)=−lnr (where r=∣r−r0∣, and ∇2ψ=0 for r=0), applied on the annulus A={ϵ≤r≤R}, derive the mean-value property u(r0)=2πR1∮r=Ruds. (Let ϵ→0+ at the end and use the continuity of u at r0.)
((b)) Deduce the strong maximum principle: a non-constant harmonic function on a connected open region has no interior maximum or minimum.
((c)) Check the mean-value property for the harmonic temperature deviation u(x,y)=kxy with k=5.0Km−2, by evaluating its average directly over the circle x2+y2=a2 with a=0.20m centred at the origin, and comparing with u(0,0).
