Problem
Let ua and ub be two orthonormal one-electron orbitals (a=b) with one-electron energies Ea, Eb, and let ϕ±(1,2)=21[ua(1)ub(2)±ub(1)ua(2)] be the normalised symmetric (+) and antisymmetric (−) two-electron spatial states. Define the direct integral Jab=∫∣ua(1)∣2∣ub(2)∣2r121d3r1d3r2 and the exchange integral Kab=∫ua∗(1)ub∗(2)r121ub(1)ua(2)d3r1d3r2. (a) Expand ⟨ϕ±∣1/r12∣ϕ±⟩ in terms of the four two-electron integrals that appear, and show that two of them equal Jab and two equal Kab. (b) Hence derive ⟨ϕ±∣1/r12∣ϕ±⟩=Jab±Kab, and so E±=Ea+Eb+Jab±Kab for the full two-electron energy (kinetic plus nuclear attraction plus repulsion).
