Problem

A neutral phosphorus atom has Z=15Z=15 protons and 1515 electrons. In the central-field approximation, one electron at distance rr from the nucleus moves in a spherically averaged potential U(r)U(r) produced by the nucleus and the other 1414 electrons. ((a)) Using Gauss's law on a sphere of radius rr centred on the nucleus, find the effective charge Zeff(r)Z_{\rm eff}(r) (in units of ee) that the electron sees in the limit r→0r\to0. ((b)) Find Zeff(r)Z_{\rm eff}(r) in the limit r→∞r\to\infty.
