Problem

Along the isoelectronic sequence with 1919 electrons, the 3d3d-4s4s gap (with 3d3d above 4s4s) is measured to shrink as the ionic charge rises:K\mathrm{K} (neutral, Z=19Z=19): 4s4s is the ground state, 3d3d lies 2.67 eV2.67\,\mathrm{eV} above it.Ca+\mathrm{Ca}^+ (Z=20Z=20): 4s4s is still the ground state, but 3d3d lies only 1.70 eV1.70\,\mathrm{eV} above it.Sc2+\mathrm{Sc}^{2+} (Z=21Z=21): 3d3d has become the ground state. Predict, with a reason based on core penetration, which orbital (4s4s or 3d3d) is the ground state of Ti3+\mathrm{Ti}^{3+} (Z=22Z=22), the next member of this 1919-electron sequence, and give its predicted ground configuration in the form [Ar]…[\mathrm{Ar}]\ldots.
