Problem

An excited configuration of magnesium is 3s4p3s4p, one electron with l=0l=0 and one with l=1l=1, occupying different subshells (non-equivalent electrons). ((a)) List the terms of 3s4p3s4p and check the total state count against the product of the two electrons' individual state counts. ((b)) Apply Hund's rules to find the lowest level of this configuration.
