Problem

An alkali atom's 4p4p level decays only by two electric-dipole channels: to the 3s3s ground state with rate A1=5.6×107 s−1A_1 = 5.6\times10^7\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}, and to a lower 3d3d level with rate A2=1.4×107 s−1A_2 = 1.4\times10^7\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}. ((a)) Find the lifetime of the 4p4p level. ((b)) Find the branching ratio to each channel.
