Problem
For the hydrogen molecular ion H2+ treated by the LCAO method with unmodified 1s orbitals on each proton, the secular problem gives the bonding-orbital energy E+(R)=E1s+4πϵ0Re2+1+S(R)J(R)+K(R) where E1s=−21Eh=−13.61eV is the hydrogen ground-state energy and Eh=27.211eV. With R measured in units of a0 and J, K in units of Eh, S(R)J(R)K(R)=e−R(1+R+3R2),=−R1+e−2R(1+R1),=−e−R(1+R).
((a)) Evaluate S, J and K at R=2.00a0.
((b)) Hence find E+(R=2.00a0) in eV, and the LCAO binding energy De(R)=E1s−E+(R) at this separation.
((c)) The LCAO curve is deepest at R=2.49a0, where De=1.76eV; the exact curve is deepest at R=2.00a0, where De=2.79eV. Explain why your value of De(2.00a0) must lie below both.
