Problem

The (0,0)(0,0) band of the B 2Σu+←X 2Σg+B\,{}^2\Sigma_u^+ \leftarrow X\,{}^2\Sigma_g^+ system of N2+\mathrm{N}_2^+ has its origin at ν~0=25 566.0 cm−1\tilde\nu_0 = 25\,566.0\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}}, with rotational constants B′=2.074 cm−1B' = 2.074\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}} and B′′=1.922 cm−1B'' = 1.922\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}}. It is a Σ\Sigma-Σ\Sigma band, so it has only PP and RR branches. ((a)) Decide which branch forms a head, and find the lower-state JJ of the line that sits at the head (the integer JJ that gives the extreme line position). ((b)) Find how far the head lies from the band origin, and its wavenumber. ((c)) State the direction in which the band is degraded.
