Problem

Two long horizontal rails of negligible resistance are a distance L=0.40 mL = 0.40\,\mathrm{m} apart and are joined at one end by a resistor R=3.0 ΩR = 3.0\,\Omega. A straight metal rod of negligible resistance lies across the rails, making good contact with both, and is pushed along them at a constant speed v=6.0 m s−1v = 6.0\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. A uniform magnetic field of magnitude B=0.25 TB = 0.25\,\mathrm{T} is perpendicular to the horizontal plane of the rails. Friction is ignored. ((a)) Find the magnitude of the emf developed along the rod. ((b)) Find the current in the resistor.
