Problem

A silicon diode (n=1n=1) is held at a steady bias current of 0.50 mA0.50\,\mathrm{mA} by a bias network that presents a high impedance to any small signal. A 5.0 mV5.0\,\mathrm{mV} peak sine wave is applied through a 10 kΩ10\,\mathrm{k}\Omega series resistor into the diode, at 298 K298\,\mathrm{K}. ((a)) Predict the peak signal voltage that appears across the diode. ((b)) The same diode type is used as a single half-wave rectifier fed from a 6.0 V6.0\,\mathrm{V} rms transformer secondary, taking a 0.7 V0.7\,\mathrm{V} drop at its peak current, charging a 1000 μF1000\,\mu\mathrm{F} reservoir capacitor that supplies a steady 80 mA80\,\mathrm{mA} load. Predict the peak output voltage and the peak-to-peak ripple, both checkable on a bench. The mains frequency is 50 Hz50\,\mathrm{Hz}.
