Problem

A junior engineer is estimating the noise floor of a telemetry receiver whose transmitted bandwidth is B=12.5 kHzB = 12.5\,\mathrm{kHz} and whose noise figure is NF=8 dB\mathrm{NF} = 8\,\mathrm{dB}. The working submitted is: "kBT0k_BT_0 at room temperature is −174 dBm/Hz-174\,\mathrm{dBm/Hz}. Adding the noise figure gives the receiver's noise floor directly: −174 dBm+8 dB=−166 dBm-174\,\mathrm{dBm} + 8\,\mathrm{dB} = -166\,\mathrm{dBm}." ((a)) Find the error in this working. ((b)) Give the correct noise floor in dBm, taking the noise-equivalent bandwidth equal to the transmitted bandwidth.
