Problem

Two independent waiting times X1X_1 and X2X_2 are exponentially distributed, f(x)=λe−λxf(x) = \lambda e^{-\lambda x} for x≥0x \ge 0, with rates λ1=2 μs−1\lambda_1 = 2\,\mu\mathrm{s}^{-1} and λ2=4 μs−1\lambda_2 = 4\,\mu\mathrm{s}^{-1}. The characteristic function of a single exponential variable of rate λ\lambda is ϕ(t)=λ/(λ−it)\phi(t) = \lambda/(\lambda - it). Let S=X1+X2S = X_1 + X_2. ((a)) Write the characteristic function ϕS(t)\phi_S(t) of SS. ((b)) Expand ln⁡ϕS(t)\ln\phi_S(t) to second order in tt and read off ⟨S⟩\langle S\rangle and var(S)\mathrm{var}(S). ((c)) Check these against the direct sum of the means and variances of X1X_1 and X2X_2 separately.
