Problem

Independent decay times t1,…,tNt_1,\dots,t_N are drawn from the exponential density f(t)=1τe−t/τf(t) = \tfrac{1}{\tau}e^{-t/\tau}, t≥0t\ge 0, with τ=5.0 μs\tau = 5.0\,\mu\mathrm{s}, and N=25N = 25 decays are recorded with no truncation of the time window. Write uu for the transform variable, to keep it apart from the decay times. ((a)) Write the characteristic function ϕ(u)\phi(u) of a single decay time, and use the scaling rule to obtain the characteristic function ϕtˉ(u)\phi_{\bar t}(u) of the sample mean tˉ=1N∑i=1Nti\bar t = \frac1N\sum_{i=1}^{N} t_i. ((b)) Expand ln⁡ϕtˉ(u)\ln\phi_{\bar t}(u) to second order in uu and read off ⟨tˉ⟩\langle\bar t\rangle and var(tˉ)\mathrm{var}(\bar t). Is tˉ\bar t unbiased? ((c)) Find the limit of ϕtˉ(u)\phi_{\bar t}(u) as N→∞N\to\infty at fixed uu, and say what it means for the distribution of tˉ\bar t.
