Problem

A fit to an asteroid's orbit gives best-fit semi-major axis a0=2.50 AUa_0 = 2.50\ \mathrm{AU} and eccentricity e0=0.100e_0 = 0.100, with covariance matrix (in units of AU2\mathrm{AU^2}, AU\mathrm{AU}, and dimensionless respectively) V=(0.00090.000150.000150.0004).\mathsf{V} = \begin{pmatrix} 0.0009 & 0.00015 \\ 0.00015 & 0.0004 \end{pmatrix}. ((a)) Find the correlation coefficient between aa and ee. ((b)) Find the lower-triangular Cholesky factor L\mathsf{L} of V\mathsf V, with V=LLT\mathsf V=\mathsf L\mathsf L^{\rm T}, that is L=RT\mathsf L=\mathsf R^{\rm T} for the upper-triangular R\mathsf R with V=RTR\mathsf V=\mathsf R^{\rm T}\mathsf R. ((c)) Using independent standard normal draws z1=1.00z_1 = 1.00, z2=0.50z_2 = 0.50, generate a correlated sample (a,e)(a,e).
