Problem
Change to the frame in which the fluid is at rest far away and a sphere of radius a moves through it at speed U. The velocity potential of this flow is the dipole ϕ=−2r2Ua3cosθ, chosen so that ur(a,θ)=Ucosθ matches the normal velocity of the moving sphere's surface.
((a)) Find ur=∂ϕ/∂r and uθ=r−1∂ϕ/∂θ, and hence show that the kinetic energy of the fluid, 21ρ∫r≥a(ur2+uθ2)dV with dV=2πr2sinθdrdθ, equals 21maU2 with ma=21ρ⋅34πa3, the added mass.
((b)) A hollow plastic ball of radius a=2.0cm and uniform density 100kgm−3 is released from rest, fully submerged, in still water (ρ=998kgm−3). Using (mball+ma)dtdU=(ρwater−ρball)Vg at the instant of release, find its initial acceleration as a multiple of g.
