Problem
A flat plate of chord c at incidence β in a stream U carries the Kutta circulation, clockwise, of magnitude ∣Γ∣=πUcsinβ (so Γ=−πUcsinβ with anticlockwise counted positive, as in the text). Writing aJ=c/4, its complex potential has the large-∣ζ∣ Laurent expansion dζdW=Ue−iβ+ζ2iUaJsinβ−ζ22iUaJ2sinβ+O(ζ−3). Blasius's theorem, in the residue form used for the cylinder with circulation, gives the resultant force X−iY=−πρC−1 and the moment about the origin M=πρIm(D−1), where C−1 is the coefficient of ζ−1 in (dW/dζ)2 and D−1 is the coefficient of ζ−1 in ζ(dW/dζ)2.
((a)) Expand (dW/dζ)2 to order ζ−2, extract C−1 and D−1, and show that the resultant force has magnitude ρU∣Γ∣ and that M=−4πρU2c2sinβcosβ.
((b)) For c=2.4m, β=9∘, U=38ms−1 in air (ρ=1.2kgm−3), evaluate ∣M∣ and the lever arm ∣M∣/(ρU∣Γ∣) of the lift about the mid-chord. Then find how far ahead of the mid-chord the centre of pressure lies, measured along the chord, and compare it with the quarter chord.
