Problem

A wide open tank holds water of density ρ=1000 kg m−3\rho = 1000\ \mathrm{kg\ m^{-3}}. A small hole in the side wall is h=3.2 mh = 3.2\ \mathrm{m} below the free surface. The tank is so wide compared with the hole that the free surface may be taken as motionless, the flow is steady, incompressible and inviscid, and the air above the surface and just outside the hole is at the same atmospheric pressure. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\ \mathrm{m\ s^{-2}}. Find the speed of the water as it leaves the hole.
