Problem
A horizontal Venturi meter is fitted in a water main. The full-bore diameter is 20 cm and the throat diameter is 10 cm. Two manometer legs, one tapped into the full bore and one into the throat, show that the pressure at the throat is 15 kPa below the pressure in the full bore. Take the water to be incompressible with density 1000 kg m−3, and treat the flow as steady and inviscid so that Bernoulli's theorem may be applied along the streamline running down the axis of the meter, which is horizontal. Find the volume flow rate through the main, in litres per second.
