Problem

Fresh water at rest has adiabatic bulk modulus Ks=2.24×109K_s = 2.24\times10^{9} Pa and density ρ0=1000\rho_0 = 1000 kg m−3^{-3}. A submerged transducer sends a plane sound wave travelling in one direction through the water; the wave is of small amplitude and losses are ignored. ((a)) Find the speed of sound in the water. ((b)) The intensity of the wave is I=1.5×10−2I = 1.5\times10^{-2} W m−2^{-2}. Find the root-mean-square acoustic pressure. ((c)) Express the intensity as a sound level in decibels using the reference intensity I0=1.0×10−12I_0 = 1.0\times10^{-12} W m−2^{-2}.
