Problem

Kerosene has density ρ0=800\rho_0 = 800 kg m−3^{-3}, surface tension γ=0.028\gamma = 0.028 N m−1^{-1} and adiabatic bulk modulus Ks=1.30×109K_s = 1.30\times10^{9} Pa (Chapter 1). Take g=9.8g = 9.8 m s−2^{-2}. The liquid is treated as a uniform inviscid continuum and the surface waves as of small amplitude on deep liquid. ((a)) Chapter 12 gives the minimum phase speed of capillary-gravity waves on a deep liquid as cmin⁡=(4gγ/ρ0)1/4c_{\min} = (4g\gamma/\rho_0)^{1/4}. Evaluate it for kerosene. ((b)) Find the speed of sound in kerosene. ((c)) Kerosene is pumped along a pipe at a mean speed U=3.0U = 3.0 m s−1^{-1}. Evaluate the Mach number of the flow and the fractional density change Δρ/ρ0≈Ma2/2\Delta\rho/\rho_0 \approx Ma^{2}/2 at a stagnation point on an obstruction in the pipe, and state whether the flow may be treated as of constant density.
