Problem
Four short, independent calculations.
((a)) Cytochrome c has E∘′=+0.25V and passes one electron to O2/H2O at E∘′=+0.82V. Calculate ΔG for this one-electron transfer, in kJmol−1.
((b)) A bacterium at 310K has Δψ=170mV (inside negative) and ΔpH=0.5 units (inside more alkaline), each pH unit worth 61.5mV at this temperature. Calculate the magnitude of the proton-motive force ∣Δp∣ in mV.
((c)) Yeast ATP synthase has a ring of nc=10 subunits. Using ∣Δp∣=200mV (7.5kBT per proton) and an ATP cost in the cytosol of 21kBT, test the free-energy balance (nc/3+1)e∣Δp∣≥ΔGATPcyt and state the margin per ATP in kBT.
((d)) A chlorophyll with absorption cross-section σ=3.8×10−20m2 sits in deep shade receiving 0.5 per cent of the full-sunlight photosynthetically active flux of 1.2×1021photonsm−2s−1. Calculate its absorption rate in photons per second.
