Problem
An actively loaded differential pair, built as in Chapter 2, has both transistors biased at IC=40μA with Early voltage VA=50V. Its output node therefore carries the parallel combination of the two transistors' small-signal output resistances ro=VA/IC.
((a)) Find the pair's combined output resistance Ro at that node.
((b)) The pair's differential transconductance is gm1=IC/VT=40μA/25.9mV. This node drives directly (with no follower) into a common-emitter gain transistor biased at IC2=80μA with βF=120, whose input resistance is rπ2=βFVT/IC2. Find the loaded first-stage gain A1=gm1(Ro∥rπ2).
((c)) A follower (same βF=120) is inserted between the pair and the gain transistor, its emitter loaded only by rπ2. Find the follower's input resistance Ri2=(βF+1)rπ2 and the new loaded gain A1′=gm1(Ro∥Ri2).
((d)) With the follower in place, a stray capacitance of 3pF loads the pair's output node. Using the resistance found by open-circuit reasoning at that node (Ro∥Ri2), estimate the pole this capacitance contributes.
