Problem

A common-emitter stage has gm=40 mSg_m = 40\,\mathrm{mS}, Cπ=12 pFC_\pi = 12\,\mathrm{pF} and Cμ=2 pFC_\mu = 2\,\mathrm{pF}, with a load resistance RLR_L chosen for a gain of 150150. It is driven from Rs=5 kΩR_s = 5\,\mathrm{k}\Omega, and its output node also carries a 5 pF5\,\mathrm{pF} load capacitance. It is to be replaced by a cascode of the same overall gain, built from two transistors identical to the first and running at the same current. ((a)) Find RLR_L and the plain stage's input pole. ((b)) Find the cascode's input capacitance and input pole. ((c)) In the cascode, the upper transistor's CμC_\mu runs from the output node to its fixed base. Find the pole of the output node, which carries that CμC_\mu and the 5 pF5\,\mathrm{pF} load across RLR_L. ((d)) The node between the two transistors sees about 1/gm1/g_m and carries the upper transistor's CπC_\pi. Estimate the cascode's bandwidth by summing the time constants of the input, middle and output nodes, and say which node now limits it.
