Problem

Planar parabolic coordinates (u,v)(u,v), with u≥0u\ge0 and v∈Rv\in\mathbb R treated as dimensionless mathematical variables, are related to dimensionless Cartesian coordinates (x,y)(x,y) by x=12(u2−v2),y=uv.x=\tfrac12(u^2-v^2),\qquad y=uv. ((a)) Using the chain rule and the Cartesian metric gij=δijg_{ij}=\delta_{ij}, derive the components guug_{uu}, gvvg_{vv} and guvg_{uv} of the metric tensor in (u,v)(u,v) coordinates. ((b)) Hence give g\sqrt g as a function of uu and vv, and evaluate it at u=2u=2, v=1v=1.
