Problem

A straight wire carries a steady current I=5.0 AI = 5.0\,\mathrm{A}. A closed loop lies entirely outside the wire and winds twice round it in the sense that gives a positive winding number, before closing up. Treat B\mathbf{B} outside the wire as the closed one-form (μ0I/2π) dϕ(\mu_0I/2\pi)\,\mathrm{d}\phi, with μ0=4π×10−7 T m A−1\mu_0 = 4\pi\times10^{-7}\,\mathrm{T\,m\,A^{-1}}. ((a)) State why B\mathbf{B} has zero curl everywhere on the loop's path yet a nonzero circulation is expected. ((b)) Compute ∮B⋅dl\oint\mathbf{B}\cdot\mathrm{d}\mathbf{l} round this loop.
