Problem
Let D be a fixed bounded region of space whose boundary surface ∂D is oriented outward, and let Q(t)=∫DρdV be the charge inside it. In spacetime with x0=ct the current three-form is ⋆J=cρdx∧dy∧dz−Jxdx0∧dy∧dz−Jydx0∧dz∧dx−Jzdx0∧dx∧dy, and it satisfies d⋆J=0. Take the four-dimensional region M=D×[t1,t2], oriented by dx0∧dx∧dy∧dz.
((a)) The boundary ∂M has three pieces: D at time t2, D at time t1, and the side ∂D×[t1,t2]. Find the induced orientation of each piece.
((b)) Pull ⋆J back to each piece and apply the generalised Stokes theorem to d⋆J on M to show that Q(t2)−Q(t1)=−∫t1t2(∮∂DJ⋅dS)dt.
((c)) State the result in words.
