Problem

Water's symmetry operations E,C2,σxz,σyzE, C_2, \sigma_{xz}, \sigma_{yz} form the abelian group C2vC_{2v}, with the molecule in the yzyz plane and the C2C_2 axis along zz. Using only the group axioms, prove that every element of a group has exactly one inverse: if hh and h′h' both satisfy gh=hg=egh=hg=e and gh′=h′g=egh'=h'g=e for the same element gg, show that h=h′h=h'. ((a)) Give the general proof. ((b)) Take g=σyzg=\sigma_{yz}, the reflection in the plane of the molecule. Write C2C_2, σxz\sigma_{xz} and σyz\sigma_{yz} as 3×33\times3 diagonal matrices, show that σyzσyz=E\sigma_{yz}\sigma_{yz}=E, and check directly that EσyzE\sigma_{yz}, C2σyzC_2\sigma_{yz} and σxzσyz\sigma_{xz}\sigma_{yz} all differ from EE, so that only σyz\sigma_{yz} itself is its inverse.
