Invariance, Ch Groups: the algebra of symmetry operations
Problem
trans-1,2-dichloroethene, ClHC=CHCl, is planar and has the symmetry group C2h={E,C2,σh,i}. Here C2 is the half-turn about the axis through the midpoint of the C=C bond, perpendicular to the molecular plane. The reflection σh in the molecular plane leaves every atom where it is, because all atoms lie in that plane, but it is still a distinct, non-identity operation. The inversion i is through the bond midpoint.
((a)) State how many elements lie in each conjugacy class of C2h, and give the reason.
((b)) Label the two carbons C1,C2, the two chlorines Cl1,Cl2 and the two hydrogens H1,H2, with C2 sending C1→C2, Cl1→Cl2 and H1→H2. Write the permutation of these six atoms produced by C2 in cycle notation and give its sign (+1 if even, −1 if odd).
((c)) Given that the two chlorine atoms form a single orbit under C2h, use the orbit-stabiliser theorem to find the order of the subgroup that fixes Cl1 in place.
