Problem

Square-pyramidal XeOF4\mathrm{XeOF_4} (oxygen at the apex, four fluorines in the base) belongs to the point group C4vC_{4v}, of order 88, whose elements fall into the five classes EE, 2C42C_4, C2C_2, 2σv2\sigma_v, 2σd2\sigma_d established from its symmetry operations. Put the zz-axis along the C4C_4 axis, the xx-axis in one σv\sigma_v plane and the yy-axis in the other σv\sigma_v plane. ((a)) Write the 3×33\times3 matrices D(C4)D(C_4) (the 90∘90^\circ rotation about zz) and D(σv)D(\sigma_v) (the reflection in the xzxz-plane) acting on (x,y,z)(x, y, z). Compute the product D(C4)D(σv)D(C_4)D(\sigma_v) (with σv\sigma_v applied first) and identify which symmetry operation of C4vC_{4v} it represents. ((b)) Using the fact that the number of irreducible representations of C4vC_{4v} equals its number of classes, and the equality ∑idi2=∣G∣\sum_i d_i^2 = |G|, find the only possible list of dimensions did_i for the irreducible representations of C4vC_{4v}.
