Problem
An ion sits at the centre of a square pyramid of five ligands, four at ±x and ±y and one at +z, with none at −z. Its site symmetry is C4v, with the C4 axis along z, the mirrors σv in the planes xz and yz, and the mirrors σd in the planes x=±y. On the classes (E,2C4,C2,2σv,2σd) the characters of C4v are A1=(1,1,1,1,1), A2=(1,1,1,−1,−1), B1=(1,−1,1,1,−1), B2=(1,−1,1,−1,1) and E=(2,0,−2,0,0), as compiled by Cotton.
((a)) Apply one operation of each class to xy, x2−y2, 2z2−x2−y2 and the pair (xz,yz), find the species of each of the five d orbitals, and say into how many levels the free-ion d level splits at this site.
((b)) Check the result by descent from Oh. The classes of C4v lie in the classes E, 6C4, 3C2, 3σh and 6σd of Oh. Restrict Eg and T2g of the chapter's Oh table to C4v and decompose them.
