Problem
The text computed [Kx,Ky] and quoted the other commutators of the Lorentz algebra. Work in the coordinates (ct,x,y,z) with the active boosts Λx(ϕ)=e−iϕKx and Λy(ϕ)=e−iϕKy, where Ky has i in the (ct,y) and (y,ct) entries and zeros elsewhere, and let Jx be the 3×3 rotation generator placed in the spatial block.
((a)) Multiply the 4×4 matrices to find [Jx,Ky], and show that it equals iKz.
((b)) Let A=−iαKx and B=−iβKy, with rapidities α and β. Use eAeB=eA+B+21[A,B]+⋯ to write Λx(α)Λy(β) and Λy(β)Λx(α) each as a single exponential, correct to second order in the rapidities. Show that the two exponents differ only by a multiple of Jz, and find it.
((c)) Take as given that e−i(αKx+βKy) is a single boost, and that eX+Y=eXeY to second order when X is of first order and Y of second order in the rapidities. What does Λx(α)Λy(β) do to a particle at rest, besides setting it moving? Give the angle and sense of the effect for α=β=0.20.
