Problem

The Brusselator model has parameters AA and BB, with diffusion coefficients DuD_u and DvD_v for the activator and inhibitor. Its Hopf and Turing thresholds and critical wavenumber are BH=1+A2B_{\rm H} = 1+A^2, BT=(1+ADu/Dv)2B_{\rm T} = \left(1+A\sqrt{D_u/D_v}\right)^2 and qc2=A/DuDvq_{\rm c}^2 = A/\sqrt{D_uD_v} (all quantities dimensionless, in the model's own units). Take A=3A=3, Du=1D_u=1, Dv=6D_v=6. ((a)) Compute BTB_{\rm T} and BHB_{\rm H}, and state which instability occurs first as BB is raised from zero. ((b)) Compute qcq_{\rm c} and the critical wavelength Λc=2π/qc\Lambda_{\rm c} = 2\pi/q_{\rm c}.
