Problem

Two regional distributors each link six warehouses, numbered 11 to 66, by direct routes. Network XX is two triangles joined by one route: 11-22, 11-33, 22-33, 44-55, 44-66, 55-66 and 33-44. Network YY is a ring with one cross route: 11-22, 22-33, 33-44, 44-55, 55-66, 66-11 and 11-44. Both are simple, undirected and unweighted. (a) Show that XX and YY have the same degree sequence, and hence the same pkp_k, ⟨k⟩\langle k\rangle, heterogeneity ratio ⟨k2⟩/⟨k⟩2\langle k^2\rangle/\langle k\rangle^2 and neighbour mean ⟨k⟩nbr\langle k\rangle_{\rm nbr}. Compute these four numbers. (b) Compute the clustering coefficient CC of each network from triangles and connected triples. (c) Find the mean distance ℓ\ell of each network over its 1515 pairs of nodes. (d) In each network, find the leading eigenvalue κ1\kappa_1 and the ratio of a degree-33 node's eigenvector centrality to a degree-22 node's. Justify that the eigenvector you find is the eigenvector centrality. (e) Say which of these summaries can tell XX from YY and which cannot, and why eigenvector centrality, though it is not a local count, still cannot.
