Many Parts, One Behaviour, Ch Communities: finding the groups in a network

Problem

Eight relay stations are linked as follows. Within group X={1,2,3,4}X=\{1,2,3,4\}: edges 11-22, 11-33, 22-33, 33-44. Within group Y={5,6,7,8}Y=\{5,6,7,8\}: edges 55-66, 66-77, 77-88, 55-88. Between the groups: edges 44-55, 22-66, 33-77. The network is simple and unweighted. ((a)) Write down the group labels si=+1s_i=+1 for i∈Xi\in X and si=−1s_i=-1 for i∈Yi\in Y, and use R=14∑ijAij(1−sisj)R=\tfrac14\sum_{ij}A_{ij}(1-s_is_j) to find the cut size of this bisection. ((b)) Check the result by counting the crossing edges directly.
