Problem

A block of mass mm on a frictionless horizontal spring of stiffness kk has displacement x(t)x(t) from equilibrium and velocity v(t)=dx/dtv(t) = \mathrm{d}x/\mathrm{d}t, positive or negative with the direction of motion. Mechanical energy is conserved:12kx2+12mv2=E,\tfrac12 k x^2 + \tfrac12 m v^2 = E,with EE constant. Differentiate this relation implicitly with respect to xx, treating vv as an unknown function of xx, to find dv/dx\mathrm{d}v/\mathrm{d}x without first solving for vv explicitly, on a stretch of the motion where the block is moving (v≠0v\neq0). Express the result in terms of kk, mm, xx and vv, and check that it has the units of s−1\mathrm{s^{-1}}. What happens to the result at a turning point, where v=0v=0?
