Problem

The small-amplitude tip displacement y(t)y(t) of a turbine blade, whose effective stiffness changes as the blade heats up after start-up, obeys τt y′′+3t2τ y′+y=0,t>0 s,\tau t\,y'' + \frac{3t^2}{\tau}\,y' + y = 0, \qquad t \gt 0\,\mathrm{s}, where yy is measured in millimetres, tt in seconds after start-up, and τ=1.0 s\tau = 1.0\,\mathrm{s} is the blade's heating time. Two independent solutions y1(t)y_1(t) and y2(t)y_2(t) of this equation have Wronskian W(y1,y2)(1.0 s)=4.0 mm2 s−1W(y_1,y_2)(1.0\,\mathrm{s}) = 4.0\,\mathrm{mm^2\,s^{-1}}. ((a)) Write the equation in the standard form y′′+a1(t)y′+a0(t)y=0y'' + a_1(t)y' + a_0(t)y = 0 and identify a1(t)a_1(t). ((b)) Use Abel's identity to write W(y1,y2)(t)W(y_1,y_2)(t) in terms of W(y1,y2)(1.0 s)W(y_1,y_2)(1.0\,\mathrm{s}), without solving the equation for y1y_1 or y2y_2. ((c)) Evaluate W(y1,y2)(2.0 s)W(y_1,y_2)(2.0\,\mathrm{s}), to two significant figures.
