Problem

A book lies face up on a table. Take xx east, yy north and zz up. A quarter turn of the book about the xx axis leaves x^\hat{\mathbf{x}} alone and sends y^\hat{\mathbf{y}} to z^\hat{\mathbf{z}} and z^\hat{\mathbf{z}} to −y^-\hat{\mathbf{y}}. A quarter turn about the zz axis leaves z^\hat{\mathbf{z}} alone and sends x^\hat{\mathbf{x}} to y^\hat{\mathbf{y}} and y^\hat{\mathbf{y}} to −x^-\hat{\mathbf{x}}. ((a)) Write the two turns as three-by-three matrices Rx\mathsf{R}_x and Rz\mathsf{R}_z. ((b)) Compute RzRx\mathsf{R}_z\mathsf{R}_x and RxRz\mathsf{R}_x\mathsf{R}_z, and say which of them means turning about xx first and then about zz. ((c)) The front cover's outward direction starts along z^\hat{\mathbf{z}}. Find where it points after each order of the two turns, and explain in one sentence why the orders differ. ((d)) Evaluate the determinant of each product, and explain why the two determinants are equal although the products are not.
