Problem

Two-dimensional parabolic coordinates (u,v)(u,v) are defined in the xyxy-plane by x=uv,y=12(v2−u2),x = uv, \qquad y = \tfrac{1}{2}(v^2-u^2), with u>0u > 0 and vv any real number, so that no two pairs (u,v)(u, v) label the same point. ((a)) Write the position vector r(u,v)=xx^+yy^\mathbf r(u,v) = x\hat{\mathbf x} + y\hat{\mathbf y}, find ∂r/∂u\partial\mathbf r/\partial u and ∂r/∂v\partial\mathbf r/\partial v, and hence obtain the scale factors huh_u and hvh_v. ((b)) Show that the system is orthogonal by evaluating ∂r/∂u⋅∂r/∂v\partial\mathbf r/\partial u \cdot \partial\mathbf r/\partial v. ((c)) Given that xx and yy are lengths, state the dimensions of uu and vv, and check that hu duh_u\,\mathrm du still comes out with the dimensions of a length.
