Problem

The diameter of a steel rod is measured eight times with digital calipers, each measurement independent of the others: 12.03,12.05,11.98,12.01,12.04,11.99,12.02,12.0012.03, 12.05, 11.98, 12.01, 12.04, 11.99, 12.02, 12.00, all in millimetres. ((a)) Compute the sample mean. ((b)) Compute the sample standard deviation, using the N−1N-1 divisor. ((c)) Compute the standard error of the mean. ((d)) If the same rod were instead measured eighty times under the same conditions, state which of the three numbers above would stay roughly the same and which would fall, and by what factor.
