Problem

A quality-control technician writes in a report: "The width of the steel plate is 152.3 mm152.3\ \mathrm{mm}." ((a)) Explain why this sentence does not yet name a measurand, even though it has a number and a unit. ((b)) Write a version of the sentence that specifies the measurand precisely enough that a second laboratory, given the same plate, would measure the same thing.
