Problem

A rectangular metal plate has length L=(15.00±0.05) cmL = (15.00 \pm 0.05)\,\mathrm{cm} and width W=(8.00±0.04) cmW = (8.00 \pm 0.04)\,\mathrm{cm}, each uncertainty a standard deviation from repeated readings with a steel rule, and the two lengths measured independently. The area is A=LWA = LW. ((a)) Find the contribution of LL to AA by moving LL up to L+u(L)L+u(L) with WW fixed, and the contribution of WW by moving WW up to W+u(W)W+u(W) with LL fixed. ((b)) Combine these to give u(A)u(A) and quote A=Aˉ±u(A)A = \bar A \pm u(A).
