Problem
A digital caliper with a resolution (display step) of 0.01mm is used to measure the diameter of a steel rod eight times, giving the readings (mm): 12.02, 12.05, 12.03, 12.04, 12.06, 12.03, 12.05, 12.04.
((a)) Evaluate the Type A standard uncertainty of the mean diameter, stating its degrees of freedom.
((b)) The manufacturer states only the display resolution as a limit on reading a single value, with no reason to prefer any part of the step. Treat this as a rectangular distribution and evaluate the Type B standard uncertainty it contributes to a single reading.
