Problem

A heavy-gauge twisted pair has line constants R′=10 Ω km−1R' = 10\,\Omega\,\mathrm{km^{-1}}, L′=2.0 mH km−1L' = 2.0\,\mathrm{mH\,km^{-1}}, C′=10 nF km−1C' = 10\,\mathrm{nF\,km^{-1}} and G′=1.0 μS km−1G' = 1.0\,\mu\mathrm{S\,km^{-1}}. Its conductors and insulation cannot be changed, but loading inductance can be added in series. ((a)) Find the rate ν=G′/C′\nu = G'/C' and the total series inductance L′L' per kilometre that meets Heaviside's condition, and hence how much inductance per kilometre must be added. ((b)) Find the attenuation of the loaded line in decibels per kilometre. ((c)) Find the speed of a signal on the loaded line, in kilometres per second.
